Making things stay connected.

Secure communication across NATs and firewalls, RFID-based positioning, distributed processing platforms, and recognition of everyday activity. We build and test connectivity from many angles.

Secure Overlay Network (CYPHONIC) Research on an overlay network that enables encrypted communication between devices across differences in network environments and device movement. We study how to build QUIC into CYPHONIC to maintain connectivity in environments that mix IPv4 and IPv6 and include NAT and firewalls. Our work has covered route optimization to reduce the load and delay caused by relaying traffic, performance improvement under packet loss, and the design and evaluation of mechanisms for connecting existing IoT devices. since 2019 latest 2026

RFID-based Positioning and Sensing Research on estimating the position and direction of movement of items from radio information obtained from RFID tags. We study positioning and tracking methods that combine received signal strength, phase and antenna placement while accounting for variation caused by the surrounding environment. Alongside a prototype analysis platform that visualizes read states in the cloud, we have also studied low-power communication that sends information by reflecting nearby Wi-Fi signals. since 2017 latest 2026

Distributed Dataflow and Edge Computing Research on a platform that processes the data produced by IoT devices by sharing the work among multiple on-site devices, rather than only collecting it in the cloud. With InfoFlow, we study a mechanism for designing a service's processing steps on screen and dividing and placing them across devices. Through software recomposition and container management, we aim to build flexible edge services whose functions can be changed easily without replacing devices. since 2021 latest 2025
